General Intelligence:

The force that allowed humans to build cities, invent writing, and launch rockets, bearing in mind that none of these were around when we evolved, and that we share 98% of our genetic material with chimpanzees. The right mix of memory, processing algorithms, and reflective capabilities that allow an entity to "accomplish complex goals in complex environments" Goertzel01. After achieving somewhere around General Intelligence, it has been postulated that an Artificial Intelligence could take over the job of its own design and improvement from the programmers, possibly resulting in Recursive Self-Improvement Yudkowsky02.
