G-Factor

Human brains are highly specialized problem solving tools. They can solve certain kinds of problems very well because it was necessary in the course of our evolution. All humans without serious defects can do basic things like recognize family members, identify food from nonfood, and use simple tools. However, humans differ in their ability to solve general problems, like solving for a variable in an algebraic equation, painting aesthetic pictures, or programming a computer.

This difference in general problem solving ability between individual humans is the result of the g factor, a psychological factor in humans that determines the generality of a person's intelligence. G factor is commonly measured using IQ tests.
