From the SL4 Lexicon:

Friendly Singularity:

A scenario in which a smarter-than-human, Kinder-Than-Human being (perhaps a Friendly AI) achieves Recursive Self-Improvement, attains superintelligence, and proceeds to help all humans in the ways we want to be helped. This Friendly Superintelligence could then assist human beings (and any sentient animals, if they exist) in their own ascent to superintelligence (if they so wished), and cooperate with humans in minimizing the threat of UnFriendly AI, a Nanotechnological Arms Race, or additional risks we aren't aware of yet. Some have argued that intelligence must necessarily be selfish, making a Friendly Singularity impossible. Yet others have argued that intelligence should be selfish, making a Friendly Singularity philosophically undesirable. Explicit supporters of the Friendly Singularity idea include Dr. Nick Bostrom, Dr. Ben Goertzel, and Eliezer Yudkowsky. See also UnFriendly Singularity.
